Family Mediation Service

Hi, I’m Cath. I’m a family mediator helping separating parents talk through the arrangements for their children and finances in a safe, structured setting. I understand that separation can bring a lot of emotion and uncertainty, and those conversations aren’t always easy. Mediation helps you stay in control of the decisions that affect your family, rather than handing them to a judge. I’ll guide the conversation, keep things constructive, and support you to reach clear, practical agreements for the future.

What is family mediation?

Family mediation is a voluntary process that helps separating couples make arrangements for their children, finances and property without going to court.

A trained, neutral mediator guides the conversation so both of you have the opportunity to be heard and work towards practical agreements. The mediator doesn’t take sides or make decisions for you. Instead, they help you explore options and find solutions that work for your family.

Mediation is often quicker, less stressful and more cost-effective than resolving matters through the courts. It also allows you to stay in control of the decisions that affect your future.

What can we discuss in mediation?

Mediation can help you work through a wide range of arrangements, including:

  • Where children will live and how they will spend time with each parent

  • Schooling, holidays and day-to-day parenting decisions

  • Child maintenance and financial support

  • Property, savings, pensions and other finances

  • How to communicate and co-parent going forward

The focus is always on finding practical, workable solutions that support your children and allow both parents to move forward.

How the process works

Initial Meeting (MIAM)
Each of you has a confidential meeting with the mediator to learn about the process and decide if mediation is suitable.

Joint Mediation Sessions
If you both choose to proceed, you meet together with the mediator to discuss the issues and explore possible solutions.

Working Towards Agreement
As discussions progress, the mediator helps you clarify options and record any proposals you reach.

Next Steps
Any agreements can be written down so you can take them to a solicitor if you wish to make them legally binding.
